Pre-production Services

Launching a new product to market is a risk for any business. And if you don’t get it right, it can be a costly risk, especially for a new or smaller company. But there are so many things you can do in the pre-production stages to eliminate risks and make sure that your product is the best it can possibly be and make sure it’s best placed to be successful.

At Fundamentally Children, we believe that research is the key to retail success, and therefore, we offer a wide range of services to our clients to help them to get the production stages perfect. We can help you to best understand your target market with quantitative and qualitative audience research. We can use focus groups to test your concepts, storyboards and prototypes. And we can provide competitor research to give you a full understanding of your category, what’s already on the market, how it sells, and its features and benefits. This enables you to launch original and new products, giving you the best chance of success.

We are also able to offer training for your team in the ages and stages of child development. This makes sure that your team have a full understanding of the consumer they are developing products for, how they play, how they learn, and what will entertain them.

Whatever your question in the pre-production stages, we have the tools to give you a comprehensive, expert answer.

What we have to offer

Toy Companies & Inventors

At concept stage, we can test your ideas with your target audience, and we recommend repeating that process at prototype stages and final product stage too, to allow you to iron out any issues that may arise in usability and appeal. We can help your team to better understand their consumer with targeted child development training, making sure they know how best to entice, entertain and ultimately design your lines for success. We can also offer competitor research to ensure you have a truly original and unique product with a clear route to market.

App Companies

At concept stage, we can test your ideas with your target audience, and we recommend repeating that process at prototype stages and final product stage too, to allow you to iron out any issues that may arise in usability and appeal. We can help your team to better understand their consumer with targeted child development training, making sure they know how best to entice, entertain and ultimately design your lines for success. We can also offer competitor research to ensure you have a truly original and unique product with a clear route to market.

Brand Managers & Creative Agencies

An ad campaign needs to resonate with either children or parents in order to give the maximum ROI. If you want to test your concepts at storyboard or rough cut stage, we can provide the audience and the insight to ensure that your campaign is impactful and memorable to the audience you are aiming to reach.

Understanding your audience and your competitors is the key to shaping your brand into the best it can be. We are able to provide insight prior to a brand launching to help you to launch with a bang. We can also help to provide feedback on an existing brand prior to rebranding, to help you to position it perfectly.

Children’s Activity Providers

If you are planning a new class, group or activity, it’s essential to research your ideas first to ensure there is a space for you in the market. We can provide competitor research both locally and nationally. We offer training on the ages and stages of development, to ensure your new concept is both fun and developmentally suitable for your audience. We are also able to test concepts out with children and their parents to give you an idea of how your new idea will work with your consumers.

Event Organisers

If you’re launching a new event, we can help you to understand what families are looking for in a day out. We can find out what would convince them to book tickets, what they would love to experience, and what are their key points when attending family events. We can also help you to tailor your event to be developmentally suitable for the children you are targeting to ensure you entertain them and keep them and their parents happy.

Examples of our Work

Ingenium Games – Ingenium Games approached us in 2016 to gain some valuable endorsement of their brand new game ‘Wordstacker’ before the Kickstarter campaign went live. We provided them with a number of services including Good Toy Guide user-testing; consultancy to rework the game instructions; Product endorsement to support Kickstarter campaign and the use of the Good Toy Guide stamp on product packaging and marketing.

Scary Beasties –  We worked with Scary Beasties to user test two prototype games.

We provided our child development and user testing expertise to support development of the Charlie & Lola I’ve Won app, with user testing of the prototype app with three to six year-olds. We offered fast turnaround reporting (within 24 hours of last session) and our child development expertise to help them launch their best possible product.

R/GA –  McDonalds’ partners R/GA brought Fundamentally Children (as well as the developers at Preloaded) on board to provide expertise on child development, play and children’s apps. We provided extensive insights on play, child development, apps, toys and children. We offered multiple rounds of user testing – providing feedback from concept to launch and gave suggestions for activities for children to play away from the screen. We rounded off our services with a review and endorsement of the final app.

Games to Get –  Games To Get approached us at London Toy Fair, looking to gain support with developing and endorsing their Sussed? card game and advice on promoting and retailing their product.  We worked on a bespoke ongoing support package of services to help them reach their goals, within their budget.  We provided product testing and endorsement; expert articles and social media campaigns; endorsement video; consultancy on product development and retailing and experiential marketing.

Mookie –  We worked with Mookie to support several of their brands in the past,  so when they were developing Pebli, they asked for our input to ensure the interaction between the screen and off line play added real play value and increased opportunities for development. Following some initial consultancy, we carried out a detailed product report on the prototype and provided feedback on the usability, engagement and developmental benefits of the product. The product was evaluated by the independent testers in the Good Toy Guide and, having met the criteria for inclusion in the guide, we were able to provide additional endorsement services.

What our clients think

“The Team at Fundamentally Children have played an invaluable part in the creation of the new Happy Studio. Their experience and insights into children, child development, toys, play and apps have enabled us to create games that are great fun for children to play whilst supporting child development. The insights they have gathered through qualitative research and play testing with children and parents have been instrumental in steering development in the right direction. They have impressed us and our client throughout, often working to extremely tight timescales. Their involvement remains a key part of the ongoing project. They are a pleasure to work with and we have already recommended them for other projects within R/GA.”
