Dr Gummer also goes on to explain how mothers can break the ‘ maternal guilt cycle’ by stop brooding on the past:

 

“There’s an old Chinese proverb – the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” So let go of the past, and focus on how you want to do things in the future.

Highlight the positives with your children. Explain, for example, that because you work, you get to go on holiday together where you have the chance to spend lots of time with each other. Children are reproachful when they think you’re too busy or don’t care.”
